I hope to be able to write this every year.
Yup, I once again successfully finished Bloomsday, on a perfectly fantastic day May 4, 2008. It’s no Boston Marathon like my good pal Aaron just completed, but it does stand for me as my annual measure that I’m not on a total landslide into apathy or worse yet, being out of shape. It feels like a big deal this year, since I turn 40. But the glory of running when I’m actually 40 can be reserved for 2009.
All I care about is running the whole thing and feeling just fine afterward. Managed that this year better than last. Ran it last year, but the ‘feeling great’ part was compromised by the fact that is was my first run in 6 weeks, fresh out of a knee brace – a little playing accident with “the boys.” My personal proud moment is that my 1:05:52 time this year earned me #23 of all the gals my age who ran it (they do all these top 25 lists when they email your results), which was much more meaningful than coming in 8th of all the folks who shared my last name.
My other unofficial goal is getting through the run without having to visit a porta-potty. It’s insane, but no matter how many times I go beforehand, boom, I gotta pee again within the first mile. What am I doing – that could be close to 2 minutes faster!!! I don’t train enough to get under an hour, but it gets tantalizingly close at 1:03:52 – maybe that’s the 40 goal.
